One month has passed since the deadly earthquake in southwest China. An editorial in the Southern Weekly newspaper based in south China's Guangzhou city says the tragedy has transformed China into a country that cares for the life and interests of every single person. The article points out that immediately after the earthquake struck on May 12, media from both home and abroad were allowed to report from the disaster-hit regions, effectively giving the public up to date information. In addition international rescue and medical teams were welcomed with massive relief funds and supplies. The paper says these changes show China's true openness to the world. The Chinese government has made it clear through its actions that saving people's lives and interests is the top priority. State leaders quickly arrived at the scene to guide the rescue effort. National days of mourning have been declared for civilians for the first time. The paper adds that all these concrete emotions and actions are a true reflection of the state's people-oriented policy. It says the policy should be applied in every part of our life and work, because a nation that serves the people surely has a bright future.
